Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
